I’m starting to believe more and more that finding, much less owning, something with personality and quirks and a one-of-a-kind sparkle is becoming a rarity, even an indulgence. Trends might certainly have their place in my life, but cookie-cutter perfection becomes boring, so lacking in soul or grace. I prefer to luxuriate in the dimples and edges of craftsmanship sometimes, to cup something in my hand and think about the other hands that so lovingly shaped it, held it, molded it. It might seem strange to look to objects for a sense of human touch, but if you find the right ones, they can be a powerful reminder of humanity and the stories we all have to tell.
I think that’s why I fell so instantly in love with Sandra Torres’s work. Her pieces have this indefinable quality that makes you want to run your hands over every inch; you can practically feel her flexion creases over the smooth, bare porcelain. Sandra likes to say that the process of slip casting and firing porcelain results “in an imprint of its own memory,” and it’s true. There’s a strength and vulnerability to it, you can practically feel a pulse beneath the delicately durable surface.
What’s also special about Sandra’s pieces is that they can so easily become a part of your everyday life. Who knew such pure delight could be found in a set of egg cups? Wine glasses? A jewelry tray. (Of course the joys of a bowl dedicated solely to ice cream need not be enumerated…) And it’s not just the structure or the elegant translucency of the porcelain, but the whimsical, earthy designs etched across each piece that are just perfect and lovely and so often playful. You can’t help but want to fill your home with all of it.
Sandra makes it all too easy to populate your life with the simple pleasure of objects that are not only useful, but made well with the utmost care. Moreover, she brings that one-of-a-kind sparkle to everything she does, which means you can indulge, and indulge often.
