Resin. It’s not a material you think of often, and if you do, you think about sleek, modernist pieces: beautiful and glowing, yes, but hardly organic.
Mexico City-based Monica Calderon’s way with resin changes all that. In her hands, resin looks raw or rough-hewn, while maintaining that distinctive resiny glow. The names of her collections tell the story of the look: pinched, honeycomb, horn, stone, to name just a few.
Monica even manages to bring to life a line of resin jewelry that has the feel of vintage, but with the strong lines of modern design running through. (It’s actually what drew us to her work, when we saw it at Dwell on Design in LA.)
Lovely, cool, unexpected.
