By Dominique Koudsi.
As a Los Angeles native, I’ve always been fascinated by the dichotomy of LA. It’s somehow both too small and too big—the quietly suburban right up against the cosmopolitan and worldly. It’s a metropolitan landscape cocooned in nature, full of rolling hills and car horns, gentle sunshine blinking over an urban sprawl. The incongruous spirit of the city is something that will always keep me an Angeleno, and all of it is sorely, sorely missed.
So you can imagine the stars in my eyes when I discovered LITE + CYCLE’s new scent for their sustainable pillar candle collection, Urban Forest, which was inspired by Griffith Park and the delightful contrariness and idiosyncrasies of LA. From Kristi Head, sleek and sophisticated artist and package designer (an LA migrant hailing from New York whom I’d officially like to claim for the LA people as one of our own), it’s a blend of woodsy scents like wild-grown cedar and fir and fennel, with hints of invigorating coffee. Organically stylish, it’s the perfect blend of the urban and the natural, it captures the energy of the city and the tranquility of the forest, and it made me feel immediately at home.
And while it’s gorgeous and aromatic and invigorating and tranquil all at once, it wouldn’t make the Handful of Salt cut if it wasn’t also beautifully made and absolutely luxurious. Crafted by hand in the US, all of LITE + CYCLE’s candles are earth-made with pure essential oils, vegetable waxes, and a single cotton wick. Each scent is indulgent and sumptuous. Even the packaging is lovely—there’s such a subtle grace to the look of delicate paper wrapped up with string. Not only are these vessel-less pillar candles a fragrant balm to the senses of the highest artisanal quality, but they are ecologically sound and sustainable, integrating renewable biodegradable materials with natural ingredients cultivated without chemicals, pesticides, paraffin, or synthetics.
Though each of LITE + CYCLE’s scents, from bergamot to lavender to vetiveria, will take you to a rare and tranquil place, I just think I may have been born to be partial to the distinctive scent of Urban Forest.
