Ahhh the holidays…along with (most assuredly) snow, craft’s seasonal spice will be peppering Boston this year. Running December 9th-11th, the Society of Arts and Crafts will host Craftboston Holiday at the Cyclorama in the Boston Center for Arts. (Handful of Salt readers get special treatment: $3 off per ticket. Click here, use the code SALT.)
What’s been great about holiday hype in the past few years is that the scope of celebrations is expanding; all traditions are starting to get the recognition they deserve. Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas, Winter Solstice, Bodhi Day (for Buddhists), Yule, Saturnalia…and all those mashups (Chrismukkah)…it’s all good. But with all this diversity and all this mixing and matching, the little mass-produced “something” from a store at the mall just won’t cut it. What you need is a little artisanal cheer. What you need is Craftboston.
SAC has always held itself to a high standard of exhibiting an array of mediums, as well as bringing new artists and mediums to the forefront. In other words, you’re going to find a little something for everyone here. There’s jewelry from Biba Schutz, metal by Elissa Ehlin of Kiln Design Studio and mixed media by Mike Libby of Insect Lab.
Holiday hunts can be daunting, but for collectors, enthusiasts and those gift-givers among us, Craftboston will be a great accomplice in the search for imagination, individuality, and flair. Just what the holidays need, whatever your flavor of celebration.
